With record numbers of students taking up university places in the UK, there has been a similar rise in the numbers using custom essay writing sites.
These sites offer to write students' essays and dissertations for them, offering guaranteed top grades and claiming to be 100% free of plagiarism. Although the sites claim the work is supplied "for reference purposes only", everyone involved knows that 99% of the time the essays are simply handed in by the students.
Some of the sites, such as UK Essays and 24 Hour Essay, are established UK sites that genuinely live up to their promises. But for every genuine site, there are hundreds of bad ones, which can usually be distinguished by their poor English, absurdly low prices and terrible quality.
Students use custom essay message boards to discuss their experiences and to make recommendations and warnings about the various sites, and the names and contact details of trusted freelance writers are passed about.
Independent verification and tests have shown that sites such as UK Essays and 24 Hour Essay are providing top quality work - often getting 1st grades for students who have put no work in. But what about the moral consequences?
Imagine you were about to have surgery, and found out that your surgeon didn't study for his qualifications at all, he simply paid an essay site to do it for him. Would be want to go ahead with the surgery?
Martin Champion, from 24 Hour Essay, says that part of the problem is English universities accepting foreign students who are ill-equipped to complete the required work. "Many of these students need help writing their essays, because the universities don't bother to check whether their English is good enough. These are extremely bright students, but they aren't being given the help they need. It's a failing of the education system, and it's driven by the fact that universities need the high fees from international students in order to survive."
No-one from the Department for Education was available to comment on this story, but privately university course leaders acknowledge that there's a problem. One, who asked not to be named, admitted that his department had accepted students without checking their claims of English competency, and had subsequently found these students were struggling.
Until the system is fixed, it seems custom essay writing sites are here to stay.
